European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
