Government Official Confirms MoD Examining Security Risk from Vehicles from China, as Personnel Told to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

Security Advice for MoD Staff

During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed reports that MoD officials have been instructed not to talk about secret information while riding in Chinese cars.

He stated that the MoD is “looking into” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but stressed that security is a concern in every contemporary vehicles.

Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a secret level in any kind of car, due to the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in every single automobile, to only have those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a wise and sensible thing for everyone worried about safety.

When it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Broader Security Background

The announcement follows reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off buses and bring disruption to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russian spy ship has been directing lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.
