Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like typical body horror, but within Together resides a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The narrative begins when the couple transition from the big city to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, blending moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that come with any relationship after ten years. At their core, they still love each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu now.
